The history of barbers spans millennia, evolving from respected Egyptian priests and Mesopotamian healers to medieval barber-surgeons performing surgery and dentistry, and finally becoming the social hubs for grooming and camaraderie known today, with the iconic red, white, and blue barber pole symbolizing their dual roles in bloodletting and healing.
Ancient Origins (c. 5000 BC - Roman Empire)
This video explains the origin of the barber pole, a symbol of the barber's history:
Medieval Barber-Surgeons (Middle Ages - 1700s)
Modern Era (18th Century - Present)

The iconic barber pole's history stems from medieval barber-surgeons who performed surgery, tooth extraction, and bloodletting; its red and white stripes symbolize blood and bandages, representing the medical side of their work, while the pole itself signifies the rod patients gripped during bloodletting, with the spiraling pattern mimicking blood-soaked bandages twisting in the wind. Blue stripes were later added in America as a patriotic nod to the U.S. flag, though some theories link blue to veins, completing the medical imagery.
